Course Description and Format
This web-based case series is designed for practicing clinicians who diagnose, treat and manage patients with, or at risk for, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The series includes case presentations of common STD-related syndromes with a guided, interactive process to evaluate each case, arrive at a diagnosis and provide recommended treatment. In addition, each case is designed to improve skills in assessing patient risk, communicating risk reduction techniques and managing partners.
Each case should take about one hour to complete. In order to receive credit/contact hours you must complete a post-test and evaluation. Continuing education is available free of charge.
Goal/Purpose
To improve health care providers' ability to recognize, diagnose and treat STD.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be able to:
Describe the initial clinical approach to a female patient with a complaint of vaginal discharge including history and physical examination.
Identify the typical signs and symptoms of the common types of the STD.
Select the appropriate laboratory tests for the STD.
Identify which additional STD/HIV screening tests are indicated.
Describe the diagnostic criteria for the STD.
Describe the appropriate treatment for the STD.
Explain the inter-relationships between the STD and infection with Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
Explain how Stage-based Behavioral Counseling can be used for STD/HIV prevention.
Explain the recommendations for management of sexual partners of women withthe STD.
